Puzzling about how the IATA airport codes assigned? Solve it here! Also the Complete list of Airport codes that start with "IX_"

IATA airport codes or any code for that matter are chosen very logically it's not messing around about the letters and they are never random numbers!

The story of assigning an indicator(code) to the specific airport started long ago probably in 1950s when Los Angeles was assigned LAX code in 1947. This coding system is basically a duplication of what National Weather Service of the USA when it Collected weather data of various cities around the country(USA) tabulated it and assigned a two letter weather station code to each city. The Aviation industry copied the same and added another word, “X” at the starting. that’s how we see 3 letter codes for every airport around the world.
The codes are chosen on the basis of the present name of city or old name of the city name of the country or the name of the airport(sometimes clubbed together). The code may be generated from the first three letters or if the city or the airport name is of many words, the code may be taken by drawing single letters from each word or there could be some other way depending on the name of city/airport and the country it is situated in. Let's have some examples Mumbai(older name BOMBAY), thus for Mumbai airport, the IATA code is BOM. For the airport located in the city of Boston, USA-the code is BOS. similarly, for Port of Spain airport, the code is POS, one letter is taken from each word. you can apply the logic and match it with all the airports around the world, I can't give many other examples, excuse me!

Now coming to  IX codes, it could be observed that they all have been assigned to Indian cities/Airports wherein ‘I’ signifies for India and ‘X’ is a trademark indicator historically. Now coming to the third letter, let me take some examples i.e. IXP--Pathankot Airport, Airport, IXC--Chandigarh Airport, IXA-Agartala Airport, Tripura and so on.
